Two Black Birds

Two Black Birds

Small, quaint, and perfect for a quick pitstop between meetings and offices, Two Black Birds is the cafe you could quickly become a local at.

Nestled on the side of Wickham Terrace, it's easy to walk by, but once you've found your way, it's the perfect stop! The cafe greets you with a 'grandma's lounge-room' type feel, making you feel warm and cozy, and ready for a good meal. It was raining the day we went, so it was the perfect escape from the dreary weather.

Upon entering, there's already several people nestled in and around the place, which is always a good sign. There's greenery, and blackboards, and the perfect little couch beckoning you through the doors, and of course, you're immediately met with a warm greeting from the waitresses behind the counter. If that doesn't make you feel welcome, the assortment of pastries, croissants, sandwiches, and wraps will!

The leather-bound menu offers more of a drinks and coffee assortment than they do for their all-day breakfast menu, but both still have delicious offerings nonetheless! With everything from 'Flame Grilled Peaches' and 'Stuffed Tomatoes', to 'Green Eggs & Sam' and 'The Inca Sandwich', as well as speciality coffees and juices, there's so much to choose from.

We settled on getting a juice and coffee, and the Green Eggs & Sam. Our coffees came out nice and promptly, followed quickly by our meals. The juice (we got Pink Lemonade, which had watermelon, apple and lemon in it) was so perfect for the sticky, humid day that it was, and the coffee was a a smooth, rich texture, with a really beautiful taste to it!

Let's talk about the Green Eggs & Sam really quick though. The poached eggs and mushrooms atop sourdough bread, with a smothering of special hollandaise sauce and haloumi. Usually, with toast, there is *something* that moistens it - a sauce, salsa, pesto... That's what this meal was missing. There was nothing that kept it all together, so when I cut into it, the entire thing fell apart. I've had a lot of Eggs Benedict, with several different variations, and none were quite like that one. I was unfortunately a little disappointed. It wasn't terrible, and if you like your mushrooms then you'd LOVE this dish, but maybe an extra bit of that special hollandaise sauce would have topped the dish off perfectly.

There's so many other things on the menu that I'd love to try out (pulled pork, sweet potato, and avocado on a brioche roll - yes please!), so I'd love to visit again! And the service was absolutely top notch - so you'll feel 100% welcomed when you do visit. If you want something quick for on the run, they'd definitely be perfect for that too, with a range of wraps and snacks pre-made and ready to go.
